RAY,

studies in autography 2014

I don’t have one specific nationality in my heart. I have decided my mother-tongue is drawing.

Drawing is a spontaneous expression, Degas called it a ‘species of writing’.

It is not a fascination with what is simultaneously felt by seeing the mark that is made, nor to communicate what is seen, nor changing a reality.

With these Ray studies, I wish to neglect the fundamental rules of drawing, which are stepping stones for painting and sculpture, explore an empirical approach, an investigation.

I’m inspired by the Japanese ‘Broken Ink’ tradition, which in contrary to the western use of perspective, uses Mark-making as a Line in-between empty spaces, questioning edges and beginning.
